Answers · Found is not chosen
We show up in AI answers. Why do buyers still choose our competitors?
Because being mentioned and being recommended are decided at different points in the conversation. AI assistants often name a brand early, then steer the buyer somewhere else when they ask what to choose. Visibility figures can't see this, because they measure the first answer, not the decision.
What is actually happening
A buyer rarely asks one question. They ask what their options are, compare two of them, raise an objection, and then ask which one to pick. Your brand can be in the first answer and gone from the last one.
In AIVO, Inc.'s research, 87.3% of brands named at the start of a buying conversation were displaced by a competitor by the fourth turn (n=1,427 brand probes across ten industries and four AI platforms).
It is usually not that the assistant doesn't know you. Models recognized 95.7% of brands at the first turn. Knowledge is not the constraint. What fails is the link between what the model knows and what it uses when it chooses. Of 592 facts AI models showed they held about brands, 75.7% were not used when the model made its recommendation (22 brand-SKUs across beauty, financial services and travel).
AIVO, Inc. calls this the Linkage Gap: the distance between being found and being chosen.
Why more visibility doesn't fix it
Most AI search advice is about appearing more often: more content, more citations, more mentions. That can raise how often you are found. It does not, on its own, change the evidence the model draws on when it decides, because the first answer and the decision draw on different kinds of evidence.
So a brand can see its visibility score rise while its share of decisions stays flat.
How to check it for your brand
- Ask the way a buyer would, over several turns: options, a comparison, an objection, then “which should I choose?”
- Record what happens at the last turn — chosen, shortlisted, a competitor, or generic advice — not just whether you were mentioned.
- Repeat it several times on each assistant. Answers vary, so read the pattern, not a single answer.
- Note which facts the assistant used for the brand it picked, and which true facts about you it left out.

Uses multi-turn buying conversationsReal buyers ask, compare, push back and then decide. A single question can't show where you drop out.

Reports outright wins separatelyBeing shortlisted alongside a rival is not the same as being chosen, and the two should never be blended into one number.
Separates searching from memoryAssistants answer some questions by searching the live web and others from what they learned in training. The two move on very different timescales.
Fixes, then re-measuresA report that stops at the diagnosis leaves you where you started. The test of a fix is the same measurement, run again.

How AIVO Meridian approaches it
AIVO Meridian runs multi-turn buying conversations on the major AI assistants, scores what happens at the decision turn, and finds the turn where a brand drops out and the evidence that was missing when it did. It then remediates that evidence and runs the same conversations again to show whether the decision moved.
Common questions
Does being visible in ChatGPT actually translate into revenue?
Not reliably. Visibility measures whether you appear; revenue depends on whether you are chosen when the buyer decides. In AIVO, Inc.'s research, 87.3% of brands named at the start of a buying conversation were displaced by a competitor by the fourth turn (n=1,427 brand probes across ten industries and four AI platforms).
Is being mentioned by AI the same as being recommended?
No. A mention is any appearance in an answer. A recommendation is what the assistant tells the buyer to choose at the decision turn. Most brands named at the start of a buying conversation are not the one recommended at the end.
Is getting found on AI the same as SEO?
Getting found is the part most like SEO. Getting chosen is a different problem: it depends on whether the model can use your evidence against the buyer's specific criteria at the moment of decision.
Does increased share of voice translate to sales?
Not on its own. Share of voice counts appearances. It doesn't record who the assistant recommends when the buyer asks what to buy, which is the outcome that turns into sales.
How do you measure whether an LLM recommends a brand versus just mentions it?
Run the conversation a buyer would have, to the point where they ask what to choose, many times and on each assistant. Score the final turn separately from presence earlier in the conversation, and report outright wins separately from shortlisting.
