Answers · Displacement
Why does AI recommend our competitor instead of us — and how do we stop it?
Usually not because it doesn't know you. At the decision, the assistant picks the brand whose evidence it can use against what the buyer asked for. If a competitor's evidence is easier to reach, check and connect to that request, the competitor wins, even if you were named first.
How common it is
In AIVO, Inc.'s research, 87.3% of brands named at the start of a buying conversation were displaced by a competitor by the fourth turn (n=1,427 brand probes across ten industries and four AI platforms).
Most of those brands were well known to the model. Models recognized 95.7% of brands at the first turn. Being known and being chosen are separate outcomes.
Where you lose matters more than whether you lose
A brand can drop out at different points, and each has a different cause:
- At the first answer — you are not considered at all. The model doesn't connect you to the problem the buyer described.
- During comparison or an objection — you are considered, but the model can't back up your claims when it weighs you against a rival.
- At the final turn — you make the shortlist and lose the close. The deciding facts for this buyer are missing or unclear.
Fixing the wrong one wastes effort. A brand that loses at the close doesn't need more awareness; it needs the deciding facts in a form the model can use.
How to find out where you lose
- Run the buyer's conversation to the decision on each assistant, several times.
- Mark the turn where you drop out, and read the reason the assistant gives for its choice.
- Compare the facts it cited for the winner with what it said about you. The gap is usually specific: a price, a proof point, a fit for a type of customer.
- Check each assistant separately. They read different sources and reason differently, so the losing turn can differ.

Measures the recommendation, not the mentionIt reports what happens when the buyer asks what to choose — chosen, shortlisted, a competitor, or generic advice — not just whether you appeared.

How AIVO Meridian approaches it
AIVO Meridian measures competitive displacement turn by turn: which competitor wins, at which turn, and on what stated reason. It then supplies the evidence that decides that turn, in a structured, machine-readable form placed where each assistant reads, and re-runs the same conversations to check whether the decision changed.
Common questions
Are we losing customers because AI recommends rivals over us?
Possibly, and you can check. Run the conversation your buyers have with an AI assistant up to the point where they ask what to choose, and see who is recommended. Most brands named at the start of such conversations are not the final recommendation.
How do I stop ChatGPT recommending my competitor instead of my brand?
Find the turn where you lose and the reason given, then supply the evidence that decides that turn in a form the model can read and verify. Then re-run the same conversations to confirm the outcome moved.
A competitor keeps coming up first in AI answers. How do we win that spot?
Coming up first and being chosen are different. Focus on the decision turn: what the buyer asked for, which facts the assistant used to pick the competitor, and whether equivalent facts about you are available to it.
How do I identify where we win and lose against competitors in AI?
Score each turn of a multi-turn buying conversation, repeated across runs and assistants, and record the turn at which you fall out and the competitor that replaces you.
How do you quantify competitive displacement in LLM recommendations?
As the share of conversations in which a brand present early is replaced by a competitor at the decision turn, with the turn of displacement recorded, reported with its sample size and range.
